3 Things I Will Share With My Audience

Hello and a heartfelt welcome! If we haven’t met yet, my name is Hoa Nguyen. I’m delighted that you’ve found your way to my new blog: Bilingual Viet Mom. To give you a little background about myself, I’m a Vietnamese mom living in the US, doing my best to raise two adorable little ones in a loving, bilingual environment.

Before I moved to the US and embarked on this beautiful, sometimes chaotic journey called motherhood, I had 6 years teaching the Vietnamese language to foreigners in Vietnam. This experience was incredibly rewarding and enlightening, it allowed me to see my own language and culture through different lenses.

When I moved to the US and we started our family, my husband, a Vietnamese American, and I had a shared vision. We wanted our children to be fluent in Vietnamese, to understand and appreciate the richness of their cultural heritage. That’s when my experience as a language teacher got a whole new meaning.

Every day is a new adventure in our household, filled with the laughter of kids, a flurry of bilingual chatter, and the unforgettable moments that make up the tapestry of our lives. At times it feels like a puzzle, a delightful, complex puzzle that we’re figuring out one piece at a time. I started this blog as a window into our world and to connect with other Viet parents out there who are on the same journey.

I invite you to join us as we navigate this journey of bilingual parenting. Here are three things you can look forward to on Bilingual Viet Mom:

  1. A Peek into Our Bilingual Household:

First things first, I plan to share with you the vibrant, sometimes hectic life in our bilingual household. Think of it as a virtual tour around our home and our daily life, where you can see and feel the intricate dance of raising bilingual children. The joyous sound of our kids speaking in Vietnamese, the funny moments when language mix-ups lead to laughter, the more challenging days when patience is stretched thin, and the triumphant ones when progress shines through – it’s all part of the experience. And every bit of it is beautiful in its own unique way. We’re very new in this journey still, our little ones are only 2.5 and less than a year old, and we’re learning so much everyday and can’t wait to share these insights with you along the way.

  1. Teaching Vietnamese to Our Kids: A Hands-On Experience:

Diving deeper, I’ll be sharing our experiences in teaching Vietnamese to our kids. As a language teacher, I have learned a lot about how languages are acquired and understood. However for my whole life I have mostly taught adult students. Now as a mom who wants to step in the role of a teacher too, I’m slowly exploring and discovering the methods. I’ll share practical tips and techniques we’ve found effective, discuss the stumbling blocks we’ve encountered and how we’ve overcome them, and celebrate the milestones that make our hearts swell with pride. I promise you, the first time your child uses a new Vietnamese word correctly, and the first time you hear them say a proper compound sentence in Vietnamese, these are purely happy moments!

  1. Sharing My Homemade Learning Resources:

Last but certainly not least, I’m thrilled to share with you the learning resources that I’ve been creating. When I couldn’t find the resources I needed, I decided to make them myself! Now, I’ve got a collection of fun, engaging flashcards and worksheets that I can’t wait to share with you. I’ll be regularly posting these on the blog for you. Expect to see a growing collection of these resources that you can easily download and use at home.

There you have it – the essence of what Bilingual Viet Mom is all about. I’m so excited to embark on this journey with you, to share, learn, grow, and build a supportive community together. Along the way, I hope we can exchange stories, tips, and experiences that will not only enrich our own lives but also the lives of our children. After all, they are the real stars of this journey, the little souls we are nurturing to become global citizens who appreciate the beauty of their dual heritage.

In addition to the three key areas we’ll explore on this blog, I’ll also occasionally share our family’s favorite Vietnamese recipes (yes, the kids get involved in the cooking too!), our celebrations of Vietnamese holidays here in the US, and our visits to Vietnam with our kids. My husband, a second generation Vietnamese who’s as excited about this blog as I am, might also jump in from time to time to share his perspectives on the joy (and the headache) of raising bilingual children.

Through Bilingual Viet Mom, I want to create a virtual home, a welcoming place where you can drop by any time for a bit of inspiration, a helpful resource, or simply to know that you’re not alone in your bilingual parenting journey. I envision this blog to be a cozy corner of the internet where laughter is shared, ideas are exchanged, and love for our Vietnamese culture and language is nurtured.

I sincerely hope that our experiences, our successes, and our challenges, will in some way make your journey a bit easier, a little more enriching, or simply bring a smile to your face on a tough day. Parenting is a journey, and a beautiful one at that, but it can also be tough, and it’s always better when we travel together.

So, welcome, dear friends, to our bilingual world! Welcome to the authentic, exhilarating, rewarding adventure of raising bilingual children. Let’s embrace the beautiful chaos, let’s celebrate the small victories, let’s support each other during the rough patches, and most importantly, let’s savor every precious moment of this journey. Because at the end of the day, it’s the shared memories, the learned words, the savored meals, the celebrated traditions, that will remain in our hearts, and in the hearts of our children.
