Now, it’s time to delve a little deeper and address the question you might be asking: “Is this blog really for me?”

If you’ve ever contemplated on fostering a bilingual environment for your child, particularly in Vietnamese and English, or if you have a connection to the Vietnamese language and culture that you’re eager to nurture and pass on, then yes, you’ve come to the right place. Let’s discuss who this blog is for, in greater detail.

For Vietnamese Parents and Caregivers

Dear Vietnamese moms and dads, this blog is unequivocally for you! The joys, the trials, the unique experiences of raising our children in a bilingual environment is something that we are experiencing firsthand. Like you, I am a Vietnamese mom, raising bilingual children here in the US.

Maybe you’ve wondered how to balance teaching English and Vietnamese at home, or how to keep our kids interested in learning Vietnamese when their friends all speak English. Or perhaps you’ve had sleepless nights, just like me, worrying if we’re doing the right thing, whether our bilingual journey might be too confusing for our kids. Trust me, I’m going through the same path, and I’d like to navigate this journey together with you.

Here, you’ll find personal anecdotes, tips I’ve found effective, and lessons I’ve learned (sometimes the hard way!). Together, we’ll create a supportive and understanding community where we can share, learn, and grow.

For Vietnamese Language Teachers for Kids

To all the fabulous teachers who dedicate their time and effort to teach Vietnamese to children, I warmly welcome you. Whether you’re a professional educator or a community volunteer, you hold a special place in the bilingual journey of many families.

Before moving to the US, I worked as a Vietnamese language teacher, teaching Tiếng Việt to foreigners in Vietnam. I understand the challenges and rewards of this profession, and I’d love to share my experiences and insights with you.

This blog will delve into not just language mechanics but also cultural contexts, providing a more holistic approach to language learning. We’ll share practical examples and strategies to weave the Vietnamese language into everyday life, making language learning fun and effective. And remember, your insights and experiences are a vital part of our community, enriching our understanding and strategies.

For Parents of Adopted Vietnamese Kids

To the wonderful parents who have chosen to bring Vietnamese children into your homes and hearts, this blog is also your space. Keeping your adopted child connected with their birth culture is a beautiful and profound endeavor.

I still remember vividly when I had the chance to meet a delightful couple, Andrea and her husband, during one of my trips back to Hanoi. Coincidentally, it was the same time when they were there to welcome their adopted son, Hoàng, into their lives. Andrea had been a customer of my online shop, Hello To Chào, which sells Vietnamese materials for kids. We had exchanged emails before finally having the opportunity to meet in person.

Seeing them in person, hearing their heartwarming journey, witnessing the nervous excitement that danced in their eyes when they were about to meet Hoàng for the first time, it was an experience that deeply touched me. Their commitment to learning Vietnamese, their dedication to ensuring that Hoàng would grow up with a strong connection to his cultural heritage, was profoundly inspiring.

Their story is one of the many reasons I am passionate about this blog. It serves as a testament to the love and dedication that transcends borders and cultures. It is my hope that the shared experiences and knowledge in this space can assist parents like them on their journey.

Through this blog, I hope to support you in exploring Vietnamese culture and language, helping your child understand and appreciate their roots. From language basics to cultural celebrations, to popular Vietnamese kids’ songs and stories, we’ll cover it all. Together, we can help our children build bridges of understanding and love that connects them to their heritage.

For Non-Viet Parents who Want to Teach their Kids Vietnamese

And to the non-Vietnamese parents who see the value in bilingualism and wish to introduce Vietnamese as a second language to your kids, welcome! Your willingness to step into the diverse world of bilingual parenting is commendable.

This blog is an excellent resource for you to understand the intricacies of Vietnamese culture and language. We’ll go beyond textbooks, exploring real-life language applications, cultural norms, traditional practices, and even culinary delights. Vietnamese is a beautiful language, and its culture is rich and vibrant.

Teaching your child Vietnamese would open doors to a different world view, to a community that’s full of warmth and hospitality. It might be challenging initially, but remember, every word your child learns is a step closer to a broader perspective, a more inclusive understanding of the world.

Here, I’ll share with you not only the tools and strategies I’ve found effective in teaching my kids, but also my experiences and reflections along the way. I hope these will help you build a comfortable learning environment for your kids, keeping them curious and engaged in their journey to become bilingual.

Remember, you’re not alone in this journey. You have a community here that understands your aspirations, your struggles, and your joy in teaching your child a second language. Together, we can make this experience enjoyable, rewarding, and meaningful for you and your little ones.
